Der Astronaut

Ich habe am Anfang wirklich keine Freude an dem Hörbuch gehabt. Ein weißer Mann, allein irgendwo im Weltraum – Das kennen wir ja alle schon und spricht mich überhaupt nicht an.

Auch beim Grundproblem der außerirdischen Bedrohung, die zwar etwas kreativer war, war ich noch nicht wirklich an Bord. Ich bin einfach ewig nicht mit dem Hauptcharakter Grace warm geworden.

Aber ich liebe Rocky! Er ist der Beste. Zugegeben, das Ende ist mir zwar fast etwas zu kitschig, aber dieses schmalzige Happy End gönne ich Rocky von Herzen.

Ha llegado al aprobado porque la premisa y su desarrollo me han volado la cabeza de lo original y bien llevado. Las ideas son súper interesantes y consigue que el discurso científico sea ameno aún cuando a veces te supere un poco (Esa sensación de "no sé de qué coño me hablas, pero a tope").

Tiene un ritmo excelente, de esos libros que saben ir de un conflicto a otro sin perder fuelle y que el hecho de que sepa aguantarte un sólo personaje durante casi 500 páginas yo lo llamo un logro.

Pero lo malo. Ai, lo malo:

-No soy yo astronauta ni científica y aún así sé que no se tocan materiales desconocidos con la piel desnuda. O que cuando entras en un ambiente desconocido antes hay que estudiarlo. O que las piezas son preciadas y no se lanzan al espacio así como así. Hay tanto comportamiento irracional en esa nave que me tenía de los nervios. -Digo que sabe aguantar, pero la realidad es que el guasón mononeuronal del protagonista casi consigue que abandone el libro. -El alienígena salvándolos con un deus ex machina de la ingeniería cada vez se vuelve muy increíble muy rápido. -Casi 500 páginas y el libro pasa el test de Bechdel por una(1) unidad de diálogo hacia la mitad. Aplauso lento aquí. -En The Martian la comandante y su equipo lo abandonan. Aquí ha decidido matarlos. La cosa es que sólo quede un señor blanco cis hetero a cualquier precio. -El libro está escrito en un idioma que tiene género neutro, pero el alien hermafrodita es "he" toda la puta novela.

A story about a high school science teacher who gets sucked (willingly) into humanity's attempt to save itself from "astrophage", a microbe that has the capability of living on the surface of the sun because it lives on energy. The problem is that astrophage will dim the sun by 10% and that will kill everyone.

The story begins with Ryland Grace waking up on a space ship with no memories. The device allows Weir to go into the history of astrophage through flashbacks, and also allow some things to not be told to the reader because Grace doesn't remember them... yet. Anyway, Grace realizes he's at Tau Ceti because it's the only nearby star system that isn't infected with astrophage and he's there to figure out why.

Project Hail Mary has a very 80s feel to it. Very gee whiz exploring the universe is very cool. A lot of plausible sounding science, if you accept the premise that a microbe can absorb the sun's energy, store it, and then propel itself at nearly the speed of light through releasing that energy.

Most of the characters appear in flashbacks explaining how we got here, and those characters are fun caricatures. Unfortunately only one of them, Eva Stratt gets any real repeat scenes. She's the administrator who is put in charge of Project Hail Mary. A wondrously amoral character that can command the militaries of any of the world's powers, including detonating nukes in Antarctica and force-drafting scientists to the project who really don't want to be part of it.

The primary story happens on the Hail Mary in the Tau Ceti system with Grace alone trying to figure out what to do. The plot is a series of scenes of problems appearing, Grace thinking and sciencing his way through them, followed by a short respite or flashback before the next problem appears. Grace solves all of them, but this isn't competence porn. He's incredibly sloppy in a way that really does remind me of my high school science teachers.

This is clearly written to be a major motion picture or a streaming series, so I expect there will be ample opportunity to consume this story that way soon.

Was für ein großartiges Buch! Der Astronaut (Project Hail Mary) ist eine perfekte Mischung aus Wissenschaft, Abenteuer und emotionaler Tiefe. Andy Weir schafft es, eine hochkomplexe, wissenschaftlich fundierte Geschichte zu erzählen, ohne dass sie jemals trocken oder unverständlich wirkt. Gleichzeitig sind die Charaktere so gut ausgearbeitet, dass die Geschichte nicht nur spannend, sondern auch bewegend ist.

Handlung & Wissenschaft

Die Geschichte beginnt mit einem klassischen Science-Fiction-Motiv: Ryland Grace erwacht allein in einem Raumschiff, ohne Erinnerung daran, wer er ist oder warum er dort ist. Schnell wird klar, dass er auf einer Rettungsmission für die gesamte Menschheit unterwegs ist. Die Erde ist durch eine außerirdische Lebensform, die Astrophagen, bedroht, die Sonnenenergie absorbieren und damit die globale Abkühlung verursachen. Grace muss eine Lösung finden – allein in einem fremden Sonnensystem, ohne Kontakt zur Erde.

Die wissenschaftlichen Aspekte sind unglaublich gut recherchiert. Weir erklärt komplexe physikalische und biologische Konzepte auf eine Art, die nachvollziehbar bleibt, ohne die Geschichte zu verlangsamen. Ob es um die Eigenschaften der Astrophagen, die Gravitation eines fremden Planeten oder die Notwendigkeit von Sauerstoffreserven geht – alles ist durchdacht und trägt zur Spannung bei.

Charaktere

Ryland Grace ist ein faszinierender Protagonist. Er ist nicht der typische strahlende Held, sondern ein Wissenschaftler mit einer unfreiwilligen Heldenrolle. Sein Humor und seine Intelligenz machen ihn sofort sympathisch, und seine Entwicklung im Laufe der Geschichte ist überzeugend.

Das absolute Highlight ist jedoch Rocky, ein Außerirdischer aus dem Eridani-System. Er ist kein humanoider Alien, sondern eine völlig andere Spezies – mit mehreren Armen, einer völlig anderen Art zu kommunizieren und einer eigenen, logisch aufgebauten Kultur. Trotzdem entwickelt sich zwischen ihm und Grace eine der schönsten Freundschaften, die ich je in einem Buch gelesen habe. Ihre Interaktionen sind nicht nur unterhaltsam, sondern auch emotional berührend.

Emotionale Tiefe

Neben der wissenschaftlichen Spannung hat das Buch auch eine starke emotionale Komponente. Grace’ moralisches Dilemma am Ende – ob er zur Erde zurückkehrt oder bei Rocky bleibt, um ihm zu helfen – ist ein großartiger Moment. Dass er sich für seinen Freund entscheidet und sein Leben bei den Eridianern verbringt, gibt der Geschichte ein bittersüßes, aber wunderschönes Ende.

Fazit

Der Astronaut ist mehr als nur ein techniklastiger Science-Fiction-Roman. Es ist eine Geschichte über Freundschaft, Opferbereitschaft und die Fähigkeit, trotz aller Unterschiede zusammenzuarbeiten. Andy Weir verbindet Wissenschaft und Fiktion auf meisterhafte Weise und erschafft eine der fesselndsten Geschichten, die ich seit langem gelesen habe.
